New Horizons

New Horizons Book cover

What is New Horizons?

New Horizons is an activity-based curriculum resource which supports the delivery of PSHE, Citizenship and Careers education for learners at Key Stage 3, working at
'P' Levels 1-8 (i.e. below National Curriculum Level 1).

Who is it for?

The resource can be used with learners in Years 7, 8 or 9.

Structure

The New Horizons Record Book contains activities within a framework of five modules: Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Relationships. The programme is learner-centred, offering structure and flexibility; it provides recognition for small steps in achievement. In each module there is a focused careers-related activity.

Working with their tutor, the student completes a Personal Skills section for each module they do, which will help them identify specific things they are good at, relating to the module theme.

The final activity in each module is My Challenge. This requires the learner, working with the tutor, to identify something new they would like to try, relating to the theme of the module.

Assessment

All certificates are awarded at the discretion of the tutor. There is no requirement for external moderation. With the development of 'P' Level descriptors in curriculum subjects, it is also possible to record the students' achievements by allocating a 'P' Level descriptor to their work, as and when this is appropriate. If a student records an achievement beyond 'P' Level 8, it is permissible to record National Curriculum Level attainment and the subject area.
